"Here at Jane, healthy eating means having a salad and a cookie—it's all about balance."

Born from a deep-seated love of all things culinary, Amanda Michael founded Jane to satisfy her passion and deliver memorable experiences to the many loyal and transient guests who have come to love the institution. Amanda's career in food and hospitality spans decades and she has spent many years cooking and baking in a myriad of restaurants.

Amanda opened Jane on Fillmore in February 2011 with the mission of serving top quality coffee, pastries, breakfast and lunch. We serve healthy food with an emphasis on flavor and quality of ingredients. Everything is made fresh daily from scratch.

Jane on Larkin opened in 2013 and our expanded space allowed us to introduce our own line of breads in addition to our house-made pastries. We also introduced our full catering department.

In late 2016, Jane the Bakery opened, allowing us to expand our bakery program even more. We bake several dozen breads daily as well as a full line of laminated items and pastries. Our breads and pastries have quickly gained recognition as some of the best you can find.

In August of 2020 Amanda took over one of San Francisco's Legacy Businesses, Toy Boat Cafe. Toy Boat by Jane opened in September 2020 adding exceptional ice cream to the Jane offerings.

In November 2022 we acquired Sweet Things Bakery and opened Jane/Marin and Jane/CalMart. We also began baking our fantastic breads in Marin to serve customers in the North Bay.

Jane Grain is our seed-to-sandwich grain program — a natural extension of our commitment to the highest quality ingredients. We grow and mill our own grain on a family farm less than two hours from San Francisco, using a stone mill that runs seven days a week to keep our flour fresh, whole, and full of flavor. We currently grow four heritage varieties — Yecora Rojo, Desert King Durum, Einkorn, and Emmer — and use Jane Grain flour across our entire bread program. Three of our signature loaves are made with 100% Jane Grain: the California Levain, The Big Miche, and our 100% Whole Wheat. Our breads are also available at BiRite and Luke's Local Markets, and at many top restaurants and cafes throughout the city.

In August 2025, Jane on Third opened at SFMOMA — a collaboration between Jane and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Located at 151 Third Street in the heart of the Yerba Buena neighborhood, our seventh location serves the full Jane menu of fresh pastries, coffee, salads, sandwiches and more, seven days a week — and is open to all, no museum admission required.
